What hexagram 23 means
Hexagram 23 shows five yin lines pushing upwards against a single yang line at the top, like a house whose roof is about to collapse. It describes a time of decline, erosion and loss.
When the tide is against you, don't act. Strengthen the base, be generous to those who support you and wait, because decline makes way for renewal.

The Image · 象曰

The mountain rests on the earth: the image of splitting apart. Those above secure their position by being generous to those below.
The lines and trigrams
Splitting Apart places ☶ Mountain (艮 Gèn), the trigram of stillness and restraint, above ☷ Earth (坤 Kūn), the trigram of receptivity and devotion. The lower trigram describes the inner situation and the upper trigram the outer world.
A hexagram is read from the bottom line up. Lines 1 to 3 form the lower trigram and lines 4 to 6 the upper trigram. Solid lines are yang and broken lines are yin; in the traditional names a yang line is called Nine (九) and a yin line Six (六).
