The lines of Qián

Yang Top line · heaven
Yang Middle line · humanity
Yang Bottom line · earth

All three lines of Qián are solid yang lines. With no yin line to soften it, Qián is pure activity: firm, bright and always moving forward.

Read from the bottom up, the three lines of a trigram stand for earth, humanity and heaven. In Qián all three are filled with the same strong energy, which is why it is the first of the eight trigrams and the parent of the other six, together with Kūn.

What Qián means

Qián is heaven, the sky that turns without rest. In the Discussion of the Trigrams (说卦传), the classic commentary on the eight trigrams, its quality is 健 (jiàn): strength, or tireless energy. Where Kūn, the Earth, receives and gives form, Qián initiates. It is the spark of an idea, the decision to begin and the will to carry it through.

In the family of trigrams Qián is the father, the head of the household who protects, provides and sets direction. That is why it is linked with leaders, mentors and anyone who carries authority. The I Ching is clear that this power must be used with integrity. Strength without virtue becomes arrogance, which hexagram 1, The Creative warns about in its top line: the arrogant dragon that has risen too high will have cause to regret it.

In the Later Heaven arrangement Qián sits in the north-west, in late autumn as the year turns towards winter. The commentary says “he battles in Qián” (战乎乾). It is the moment when light and dark contend, and only the strongest principles hold.

天行健,君子以自强不息。

Heaven moves with strength. The noble person makes themselves strong and never stops.

Qián as the lower and upper trigram

Every hexagram has a lower trigram for the inner situation and an upper trigram for the outer world. Qián reads a little differently in each place.

Below: the inner world

As the lower (inner) trigram, Qián shows strong inner resources: confidence, energy and a clear sense of purpose. The question is how that strength meets the outer world. In hexagram 11, Peace it is welcomed and heaven and earth meet in harmony, while in hexagram 5, Waiting the strength must wait patiently for the right moment.

Above: the outer world

As the upper (outer) trigram, Qián shows a strong, demanding environment: authority, high expectations or forces larger than yourself. In hexagram 12, Standstill heaven above and earth below drift apart and nothing moves, while in hexagram 25, Innocence heaven above thunder asks for honest, spontaneous action with no hidden motives.

Qián in feng shui

On the Later Heaven bagua used in feng shui, Qián governs the north-west, the area of helpful people, mentors and travel, and traditionally the corner of the father or head of the household. Its element is Metal, supported by round shapes, metal objects and white, grey, silver or gold tones. In the Eight Mansions system, people with a kua number of 6 belong to Qián and the West group.

Tips for the north-west

  • Keep the north-west tidy and well lit to invite support from mentors and helpful people
  • Use round metal objects, such as a brass bowl or a metal-framed clock
  • Go easy on strong reds here, since Fire melts Metal in the five-element cycle
